About this Show

The program's history has two distinct phases. 'The New Adventures of Philip Marlowe' aired on NBC from June 17 to September 9, 1947, with Van Heflin playing Marlowe. The CBS revival began September 26, 1948, with Gerald Mohr in the role. Producer Norman Macdonnell (who later created Gunsmoke) and writers Gene Levitt and Kathleen Hite brought Chandler's aesthetic to original stories. Raymond Chandler himself praised Mohr's portrayal in correspondence, describing his voice as having 'personality' — high praise from a writer notoriously difficult to please. The series ended September 15, 1951.
