About this Show
Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll developed the characters from a prior show called Sam 'n' Henry on Chicago's WGN beginning in 1926. Moving to WMAQ in 1928 as Amos 'n' Andy, the show launched nationally on NBC Blue on August 19, 1929. By 1930, it was estimated that 40 million Americans were listening nightly. In 1951, a television version was produced with an all-Black cast — a historic first for a network sitcom, though it was cancelled in 1953 following NAACP protests. CBS withdrew the TV series from all syndication in 1966.
