About this Show
Arch Oboler's Plays premiered March 25, 1939, on NBC, with Oboler spending his own money to produce the initial audition episode. The gamble paid off: NBC commissioned a full season, and Oboler became the first writer ever accorded name-in-the-title status on American radio. The series ran until March 23, 1940 — one full year of Saturday evening broadcasts. The adaptation of Dalton Trumbo's 'Johnny Got His Gun' (December 30, 1939), featuring James Cagney, is considered the series' masterpiece.
