About this Show
After the Mercury Theatre's War of the Worlds broadcast made Welles a household name in October 1938, Campbell Soup stepped in as sponsor, creating The Campbell Playhouse. With an expanded budget, Welles could now hire major Hollywood stars — Katharine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, Helen Hayes, Margaret Sullavan — to appear alongside his Mercury Theatre company. The show aired weekly from December 1938 through March 1940, when Welles departed for Hollywood to make Citizen Kane. The series is considered among radio drama's finest achievements.
