About this Show
The Witch's Tale debuted May 21, 1931, on WOR in New York, created, written, and directed by Alonzo Deen Cole. The first Old Nancy was played by stage actress Adelaide Fitz-Allen until her death in 1935 at the age of 79. Cole then replaced her with 13-year-old Miriam Wolfe, creating an unsettling dissonance that listeners found either more terrifying or simply strange. Cole wrote all 332 scripts himself and copyrighted them individually — which preserved the scripts even after the recordings were lost. Cole provided the voice of Satan the cat himself throughout the run.
