About this Show
The series premiered April 26, 1952, with 'Billy the Kid,' written by Walter Newman. CBS funded the program directly without a sponsor initially — an unusual arrangement that gave producers creative freedom. William Conrad won the role of Matt Dillon despite producers' initial concern that his voice was too familiar from other radio dramas. When the program made the transition to television in 1955, Conrad was famously passed over for the TV Dillon role (given to James Arness) because producers felt he didn't look the part. The radio series ended June 18, 1961, having produced 480 episodes.
