About this Show
The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok came to Mutual radio on April 1, 1951, the same year the television series of that name premiered. Guy Madison played the marshal and Andy Devine his sidekick Jingles, both repeating their TV roles, and the radio version ran until 1956 alongside the TV show.
It was a juvenile Western, pitched squarely at an after-school audience. Kellogg's was the first sponsor, with announcer Charlie Lyon also voicing 'Panhandle Jim' for Corn Pops commercials; other advertisers came later. Wild Bill rode Buckshot and Jingles rode Joker, while Hollywood radio actors filled in the outlaws and townsfolk.
The formula was simple: a new gang of bad men, a chase, and justice by the final commercial, with Devine's gravel-voiced comedy keeping things light. Old Time Radio Catalog counts 267 episodes for the 1951–1956 run.
It is a cheerful time capsule of 1950s Saturday-matinee heroics, made for kids and still easy company.
