About this Show

21st Precinct was written and directed by Stanley Niss, with John Ives as producer, and ran on CBS from July 7, 1953, to July 26, 1956. It was produced in cooperation with the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association of the City of New York.

The show billed itself as adaptations from true criminal records in New York, told from the policeman's point of view. Its precinct covered nine-tenths of a square mile between Fifth Avenue and the East River, home to about 173,000 people, on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Everett Sloane played Captain Frank Kennelly for the first 109 episodes, with Ken Lynch as Lieutenant Matt King, Harold Stone as Sergeant Waters and Santos Ortega as Lieutenant Gorman. Later commanders were James Gregory as Captain Cronin and Les Damon as Captain Keough.

Its unglamorous, shift-by-shift realism makes it a fine companion to Dragnet.
