About this Show
Boston Blackie began in Jack Boyle's magazine fiction, first appearing in 'The Price of Principle' in The American Magazine in 1914. By the 1940s he was a reformed safecracker turned amateur sleuth, the hero of a Columbia film series starring Chester Morris.
Morris brought the character to NBC as a summer replacement for Amos 'n' Andy from June 23 to September 15, 1944, with Richard Lane as Inspector Farraday. Every show opened with the line: 'Enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend.'
From April 1945 to October 1950 Frederic Ziv produced a transcribed version starring Richard Kollmar, syndicated to Mutual and other stations. Maurice Tarplin played the perpetually suspicious Farraday and Jan Miner played Blackie's girlfriend Mary; more than 200 half-hour episodes were made.
The banter between Blackie and Farraday is the draw: light, quick, and still fun.
