About this Show
Calling All Cars premiered on November 29, 1933, and ran until September 8, 1939, heard on the CBS West Coast network and the Mutual-Don Lee network. It was written and produced by William N. Robson, later one of CBS's most respected drama directors, with Robert Hixon directing.
Each episode dramatized a case handled by the Los Angeles Police Department, and LAPD Chief James E. Davis served as host. Narration came from Charles Frederick Lindsey, a speech professor at Occidental College, while most of the actors went uncredited. The sponsor was the Rio Grande Oil Company.
It is counted among the first police dramas on radio. In 1938 it won the Institute of Audible Arts Trophy for the most consistently excellent program broadcast in the western United States, and historian John Dunning called it a crude forerunner of Dragnet.
Listen for the raw beginnings of the police procedural, years before the form was polished.
