About this Show

Casey was created by crime writer George Harmon Coxe, whose news photographer first appeared in Black Mask magazine in 1934. CBS brought him to radio on July 7, 1943, and the series kept the network through its whole life, though it went by several names: Flashgun Casey, Casey, Press Photographer, Crime Photographer, and Casey, Crime Photographer.

Staats Cotsworth was the best-known Casey (Matt Crowley also played the part), with Jan Miner as reporter Ann Williams and John Gibson as Ethelbert, the bartender at the Blue Note. The tavern gave the show its sound: the Archie Bleyer Orchestra, and first Herman Chittison's and later Teddy Wilson's trio, framed each story.

The first run ended on November 16, 1950; after a brief TV version in 1951–52, the radio series returned from January 1954 to April 22, 1955. Sponsors included Anchor Hocking, Toni and Philip Morris.
