About this Show
CBS Radio Workshop premiered on January 27, 1956, reviving the experimental spirit of the network's pre-war Columbia Workshop. Producers William N. Robson and William Froug billed it as 'radio's distinguished series dedicated to man's imagination.'
It opened with a two-part adaptation of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, introduced and narrated by Huxley himself. Sound was central: one widely quoted account says it took three sound men, an engineer and five hours to create a sound heard for under 30 seconds in that premiere.
Over 86 episodes the series adapted Cheever, Heinlein, Poe, Thurber, Twain and Thomas Wolfe, remade Columbia Workshop classics such as Archibald MacLeish's 'Air Raid,' and used music by Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith and Leith Stevens. It ended on September 22, 1957, one of network radio's last bids to hold listeners lost to television.
Its risks still sound fresh, making it a showcase of what radio can do that nothing else can.
