About this Show
The Halls of Ivy was created by Don Quinn, co-creator and writer of Fibber McGee and Molly, and premiered on NBC on January 6, 1950. Nat Wolff produced and directed, and the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company sponsored.
Ronald Colman starred as Dr. William Todhunter Hall, president of Ivy College in the Midwest, with his real-life wife Benita Hume as Victoria Hall, a former English actress. Herb Butterfield played the stuffy board chairman Clarence Wellman, Willard Waterman was John Merriweather, and Gloria Gordon played the Halls' maid.
Built on gentle wit rather than gags, the show won a Peabody Award in 1950. It ended on June 25, 1952, after 109 half-hour episodes, and Colman and Hume carried it to television for 38 episodes in 1954–55.
It is radio comedy at its most literate and warm, carried by one of Hollywood's finest voices.
