About this Show
Lux Radio Theatre premiered on October 14, 1934, on the NBC Blue Network, originating in New York. Sponsored throughout by Lux Soap, it moved to CBS in 1935 and relocated to Hollywood in 1936, where it turned to hour-long adaptations of current films.
Cecil B. DeMille hosted from June 1936 until January 1945, when he refused to pay a one-dollar political assessment levied by the American Federation of Radio Artists and was barred from the air. William Keighley followed as host, then Irving Cummings from 1952.
Performed live before a studio audience, the show routinely brought film stars to the microphone, often in roles they had played on screen. It returned to NBC for its final season and closed on June 7, 1955, after 927 broadcasts; a television cousin, Lux Video Theatre, ran from 1950 to 1957.
Today it is the closest thing we have to hearing Hollywood's studio era perform its own greatest hits, live and without a net.
