About this Show
Pat Novak, for Hire began in 1946 as a West Coast regional program at KGO in San Francisco, starring Jack Webb with scripts by his roommate Richard L. Breen. Novak is no detective by trade: he rents boats and takes odd jobs from Pier 19, and the jobs always go bad.
When Webb and Breen moved to Los Angeles to make the very similar Johnny Madero, Pier 23 for Mutual, Ben Morris took over the regional Novak and other writers stepped in.
In 1949 ABC revived the show nationally with Webb back as Novak and Breen back as writer. Jack Lewis and later Tudor Owen played Novak's friend Jocko Madigan, and Raymond Burr, later John Galbraith, played the hostile Inspector Hellman.
Breen's overripe similes and Webb's sardonic delivery make it the wittiest, most quotable of radio's tough-guy shows.
