About this Show
Philo Vance was created by S. S. Van Dine, the pen name of critic Willard Huntington Wright, and starred in twelve novels from 1926 to 1939. Radio took him up three times.
José Ferrer played Vance on NBC in 1945, and John Emery took the role in a 1946 summer series. The best-known version was syndicated by Ziv from 1948 to 1950, with Jackson Beck as Vance, Joan Alexander as his secretary and assistant Ellen Deering, George Petrie as District Attorney Markham and Humphrey Davis as Sergeant Heath.
The Ziv series kept little of Van Dine's aesthete beyond the name, making Vance a capable, courteous investigator in the usual radio mould. Most of its episodes survive, so it is the version listeners know today.
Beck's steady voice and tidy half-hour puzzles make it a comfortable listen.
