The Adventures of Sam Spade brought Dashiell Hammett's iconic character from The Maltese Falcon to radio in original mystery adventures. Broadcasting on ABC, CBS, and NBC from 1946 to 1951, the series featured Sam Spade dictating his latest case to secretary Effie Perrine, with each story unfolding in flashback.
Howard Duff's wise-cracking, sardonic portrayal became radio's definitive Sam Spade, combining tough detective action with humor and charm. Lurene Tuttle as the loyal Effie Perrine provided the perfect foil.
Directed by the legendary William Spier, the series won the Edgar Award for Best Radio Drama from the Mystery Writers of America in 1947. The show was an immediate hit when it launched as a summer replacement in July 1946, becoming so popular it moved to a regular CBS fall lineup just months later.
