About this Show
The series began on NBC on January 9, 1949, initially under the name NBC Theater, and took the title Screen Directors' Playhouse from July 1, 1949.
Each broadcast adapted a Hollywood film with leading actors, often stars of the original picture. The film's director was frequently involved, though usually only to introduce the adaptation and chat briefly about making the movie.
Most episodes ran 30 minutes; the ninth show and episodes 76 through 122 were expanded to a full hour. A television series of the same name followed on NBC in 1955 and moved to ABC before ending in 1956.
It is a good way to hear film favorites condensed for the ear, with the directors themselves stepping up to the microphone.
