About this Show
The Six Shooter grew out of an episode of NBC's Hollywood Star Playhouse, aired April 13, 1952, with the same script later reused for the series. Frank Burt created and wrote it, and Jack Johnstone produced and directed for NBC in association with Revue Productions.
James Stewart starred as Britt Ponset, a drifting cowboy whose travels mixed gunplay with gentle humor. The series ran from September 20, 1953, to June 24, 1954, for 39 episodes. Coleman bought time on the first four shows, but no sponsor stayed after that; Stewart turned down tobacco money as a poor fit for his image.
Highlights include 'Britt Ponset's Christmas Carol' and the finale, 'Myra Barker,' in which Ponset chooses the open road over settling down. The format became the TV series The Restless Gun in 1957, with John Payne as Vint Bonner.
Stewart's easy warmth makes this one of radio's most likeable Westerns.
